St. Paul, MN (March 28, 2020) — According to Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team News, a Mercedes-designed breathing aid is approved for use in the UK. As the impact of the coronavirus pandemic continues to be felt around the world, F1 teams have committed to lending their engineering capabilities to support health services through the ‘Project Pitlane.’

Mercedes High Performance Powertrains have produced engines that have won eight constructors’ championships and 10 drivers’ championships in Formula 1, and as part of ‘Project Pitlane’ they’re now helping turn the tide in the battle against coronavirus.

The breathing aid developed by engineers at Mercedes HPP, engineers at University College London (UCL) and clinicians at UCL Hospital has now been approved for use by the UK’s National Health Service in the battle against coronavirus.

With the world facing a CPAP shortage, engineers worked around the clock at UCL’s campus on the project and managed to achieve the first device production less than 100 hours from the first meeting on Wednesday March 18.

One hundred devices will be used at University College Hospital for clinical trials before rapid roll-out to hospitals across the UK.

This respiratory device, the ‘Continuous Positive Airway Pressure’ (CPAP), is a breathing aid that helps coronavirus patients with serious lung infections to breathe and avoid having to use ‘invasive mechanical ventilation’ – breathing devices that involve tubes through the skin or mouth.

According to UCL, “It took fewer than 100 hours from the initial meeting to production of the first device.”

The Mercedes F1 Team invests in Matsuura’s MAM72 Series featuring high-accuracy, complex, five-axis machining that meets the need for cost-effective unmanned operation, as announced by Matsuura Machinery UK in 2014.

The MAM72 Series delivers long periods of unmanned productivity, and provides versatility in the machining of very small to very large components.  Matsuura has a high performance MAM72 solution for every industry.

The Matsuura MAM72 Series was designed to meet global market demand for long periods of unmanned production, the elimination of setup times, and lower production costs.  The series includes the MAM72-35V, the MAM72-63V, the MAM72-70 and the MAM72-100H.

Formula 1 Statement: Project Pitlane – Seven UK-based Formula 1 teams making significant progress towards UK Government’s call for assistance with the manufacture of medical devices to help in the treatment of COVID-19 patients.

As confirmed today by The UK Government, during the past two weeks a collective of seven UK-based Formula 1 teams, their respective technology arms and Formula 1 has made significant progress in defining and coordinating its response to the UK Government’s call for assistance with the manufacture of medical devices to help in the treatment of COVID-19 patients.

Following decisions taken this week by the UK Government, Project Pitlane is focused on three workstreams. These workstreams vary in scope from reverse engineering existing medical devices, to support in scaling the production of existing ventilator designs as part of the VentilatorChallengeUK consortium, to the rapid design and prototype manufacture of a new device for certification and subsequent production.

Andy Cowell, Mercedes HPP’s Managing Director, said: “The Formula 1 community has shown an impressive response to the call for support, coming together in the ‘Project Pitlane’ collective to support the national need at this time across a number of different projects.

“We have been proud to put our resources at the service of UCL to deliver the CPAP project to the highest standards and in the fastest possible timeframe.”

The focus of Project Pitlane will now be on coordinating and answering the clear challenges that have been set. The seven teams remain ready to support in other areas requiring rapid, innovative technology responses to the unique challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
