MATSUURA WILL SHOWCASE THE LUMEX AVANCE-25 AND MAM72-70V AT CMTS SEPTEMBER 30-OCTOBER 3

St. Paul, MN (September 5, 2019) — Matsuura will showcase automated, unmanned machining, 5-axis palletized manufacturing solutions and metal laser sintering/hybrid milling innovation at the Canadian Manufacturing Technology Show September 30-October 3, 2019 in Ontario.

Elliott Matsuura will exhibit in three booths at CMTS: 2360; 2148; and 2161.

CMTS is Canada’s national stage for manufacturing technologies, best practices and industry connections. For more than 40 years, the CMTS audience from within Canada’s leading industries including automotive and aerospace have come together to source solutions and knowledge from the global leaders in machine tools and tooling, metalworking, and advanced manufacturing.

Elliott Matsuura will exhibit the LUMEX Avance-25 metal laser sintering hybrid milling machine and the MAM72-70V, a high speed, large capacity 5-axis vertical machining center at this year’s event.

The Matsuura LUMEX Avance-25 is a powder bed metal AM platform with subtractive machining capability. The machine combines selective laser sintering (SLS) along with high speed milling (HSM) commonly called Hybrid AM.

The Avance-25 relies on one-machine, one-process manufacturing of complex molds and parts by fusing metal laser sintering technology with high speed milling technology. The Hybrid technology creates a “finished” part with machined surface finish and accuracy, without inducing the additional variation caused by multiple machine set-ups and part handling.

The Avance-25 achieves the highest accuracy in part fabrication since metal powders are melted and sintered via laser, while surfaces are precisely milled at high speeds. 3D cooling channels can be incorporated into molds in the single setup, thereby increasing cooling efficiency and enabling high-cycle injection molding with better than ever quality and precision, reducing costs and improving efficiency.

Tom Houle, Director, LUMEX NA, explains that Matsuura’s Hybrid additive/subtractive machining produces highly accurate parts from metal powders that are melted and sintered using a laser while surfaces are precisely milled at high speeds. This technology allows the ability to “grow” a metal component in layers with complex internal features and fine mill those internal features, as the layers are added, to give a perfect surface finish are what makes the LUMEX Series such a distinctive, unique and remarkable production platform and machine tool.

Houle believes that the hybrid technology is a proven solution for moldmakers. In most cases, the proper implementation of the hybrid technology in a mold component will eliminate the need for EDM. This in and of itself is a large time saver in the mold build process. Many components can be completely machined in the hybrid machine, there is an elimination of queue times to get other work completed on a component, typically reducing overall mold build time.

The Matsuura LUMEX Technology has completely disrupted the part design paradigm. Instead of starting from a block or some other traditional geometric shape, the designer now begins with a blank page to ‘grow’ their designs for lightest weight, sleekest design, and most efficient use of material.

The MAM72-70V is a high speed, large capacity 5-axis vertical machining center. Introduced in 1991, the Matsuura MAM72 series presented the tower pallet system and remains unrivaled in the marketplace.

The MAM72 Series achieves process integration, complex 5-axis machining and versatile functionality in all machining environments. Variable-part, variable-volume production and reliable extended unmanned operation are a standard feature of the MAM72 Series.

“The MAM72-70V is designed to handle a greater workpiece size than Matsuura’s existing models, offers faster response times to the market and delivers an even higher productivity to meet customers’ business requirements for faster cycle times and cost down performance,” said David Hudson, Matsuura Machinery USA Vice President of Sales and Marketing.

The MAM72-70V features a maximum workpiece of D700mm x H500mm with a load capacity of 500kgs per pallet: an 11% increase in diameter/height; 43% increase in weight; and 38% increase in envelope volume as compared to the MAM72-63V.

The MAM72-70V includes a newly developed 4th / 5th axis table equipped with a proven roller gear drive for the 4th axis and direct drive motor for the 5th axis. These enhancements achieve a rapid traverse rate of 50 min-1 and 100 min-1 respectively, enabling high speed, high accuracy and durability in extended performance over the lifetime of the machine.

By improving the MAM72 structure, improved ergonomic operator access and ease of operation for setup and maintenance are assured. The distance from the machine front (oil pan edge) to the pallet center is now only 620mm.

“Unmatched in performance, and the globally trusted “go to” platform for a variety of precision led industries, the MAM72 Series enhances cost-savings and provides better positioning, while delivering pallet and productivity solutions to keep your work center efficiently producing components around the clock,” Hudson added.

The standard MAM72-70V is available as a twin pallet with tool storage capacity that may be extended to 530 tools (matrix type magazine), and optional pallet storage capacity can store 18 pallets in a tower pallet system.

The MAM72-70V is IoT ready, delivering measurable remote and real time monitoring of the machine status, condition and performance. IoT, the internet of things, is a system of interrelated computing devices, mechanical and digital machines, objects, animals or people that are provided with unique identifiers (UIDs) and the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction.

CMTS is located at the International Centre (Halls 1-4), 6900 Airport Road in Mississauga, Ontario L4V 1E8.
