MATSUURA MACHINERY’S TECHNOLOGY REINFORCES S&H MACHINE’S LEAN BUSINESS MODEL

S&H Machine in Burbank, CA embraces a lean manufacturing process which reduces lead times, while consistently achieving on-time delivery ratings that are considered to be among the best in the industry.

S&H Machine utilizes the highly sophisticated Matsuura MAM72-35V Five-Axis Vertical Machining Center to provide shorter lead times, competitive pricing, exceptional quality and consistent on-time delivery.

“My Matsuura MAM72-35V Five-Axis Vertical Machining Center’s technology provides reduced labor costs, better flow, less bottlenecks, and allows us to run much leaner,” S&H Machine President David Fisher said.

S&H Machine was established in 1960 and is one of Southern California’s leading contract manufacturers.  The company serves the Aerospace, Defense, Medical and Industrial markets, while specializing in high-precision, close tolerance machined parts, sub-assembly and testing.

With sales over 10 million in 2013, the company continues to expand. Today, S&H Machine boasts a 47,000 sq. ft. campus occupying eight buildings and operating 59 CNC machining centers plus 22 additional conventional support machines.

Fisher, who has nearly 20 years’ experience in manufacturing, joined S&H Machine in 1995, and was appointed President in 2008.

Fisher became familiar with Matsuura after looking into multi-pallet options for Five-Axis machining.  Brian O’Rell, President and Owner of Vanderhorst Brothers, Inc., and Fisher’s peer in Southern California Manufacturing Group (SCMG), suggested he consider the MAM72-35V.

“In 2007 we toured a friend’s facility utilizing the MAM72-35V, and went out to dinner.  After dinner, he took us back to the shop.  It was completely dark, but here is this MAM humming along producing complex parts unattended.  I knew I had to have it,” said Fisher.

S&H Machine had received a large contract and was in the market for a new Five-Axis vertical machining center.

“We took the opportunity to the market to find a solution at the customer’s target price.  Matsuura allowed us to win that business,” Fisher explained.

“If it had not been for my friend vouching for the machine, I would not have believed the Matsuura salesman and everything he said the Matsuura could do for us,” Fisher added.

Fisher purchased his first Matsuura MAM72-35V Five-Axis Vertical Machining Center with 32 pallets and 240 tools in 2007 from Selway Machine Tool.

“We knew of Selway, but this was our first purchase.  We wanted a dealer in the area that would support such an investment and honor his commitments.  We found Bill Selway to be an honest guy with integrity,” Fisher said.

Fisher recently attended an Open House at Matsuura USA’s 40,000 sq. ft. facility in St. Paul, MN.

“I was impressed with the location and the investment Matsuura has made, especially with the large selection of parts and spindles,” Fisher explained.

“With a complex machine, it is vital we get the parts we need,” he added.

Fisher recommends Matsuura often, and frequently welcomes customers into his facility to see the unattended machining value they are receiving from the Matsuura MAM72-35V Five-Axis Vertical Machining Center.

“We give tours all the time and the highlight is the Matsuura MAM72-35V Five-Axis Vertical Machining Center.  It has a lot of wow factor,” Fisher said.

Fisher has also partnered with O’Rell in the creation of Raptor Workholding Products, which specializes in dovetail workholding fixtures for Five-Axis manufacturing.

“This entire company was created around the MAM. We have designed workholding to fit Matsuura pallets and machine five sides of the part in one operation.  The very first Raptor fixture was built on the MAM,” Fisher said.

Now, the company sells to thousands, all over the world.

“We have had our Matsuura MAM72-35V for almost seven years and have found it to be very reliable and completely worth the investment.  We have absolutely no regrets,” Fisher concluded.
