St. Paul, MN (September 22, 2016) — Matsuura Machinery USA is sharing portions of a blog post by Peter Zelinski, writer and editor for Modern Machine Shop. At Matsuura Machinery USA, we are in agreement with his assessment of this year’s show. With over 115,600 registrants several patterns emerged: Purposefulness of attendees; Automation as a given; and Generational changes.
Matsuura Machinery USA has frequently publicized how Matsuura’s automation solutions and new technologies provide a competitive edge. Matsuura’s high-accuracy machining equipment, including multi-pallet and multi-tasking machine tools provides manufacturing solutions to a wide range of industries around the globe. Our automation proficiencies and automatic tool change abilities can simplify your production process, reduce cycle time and provide unmanned machining capabilities.
As Mr. Zelinski explains, IMTS finished last week with 115,612 total registrants—up slightly from two years ago. But that number doesn’t tell the most significant story. Far from making an incremental step forward, the show this year seemed to me to cross an important threshold, beginning to assume the form it will take next as it continues to respond to changes in industrial manufacturing.
He is referring to cultural and demographic shifts—Baby Boomers are leaving the industry and Millennials are coming in, producing a particularly large generational step-change. But an equally important part is technological. IMTS this year embraced and provided a serious forum for technologies that were present more as intriguing novelties at previous shows.
Another area Mr. Zelinski describes is the “Purposefulness of attendees.” To an extent that has noticeably increased, attendees to IMTS no longer show up to window-shop competing machines in particular categories so they can compare specs and features. Customers have completed their research online prior to arriving at the show.
Instead, it has become much more common for attendees to arrive with a mission. The shop owner or manager brings a certain vexing process inefficiency or bottleneck to IMTS exhibitors in order to ask, How can you help me solve this? Or the attendee comes to exhibitors with a part print saying, ‘What solution can you give me for making this part cost-effectively?’
At Matsuura Machinery USA, we seek to SOLVE our customer’s problem, not simply to sell a product. When Matsuura sales personnel visit customers, they are there to SOLVE challenges. By asking questions and carefully listening to our customers, Matsuura sales personnel diagnose the issue, think long-term and do not allow price to be a roadblock for the customer.
As manufacturing in North America becomes more complex, requiring multi-axis machining solutions, Matsuura is the preeminent solutions provider. While most industries maintain a higher part mix and smaller batch production, reduction of inventory is an imperative initiative. Additionally, with pressure on pricing and margins, customers realize they must discover methods to reduce labor costs.
Matsuura customers have high expectations: they want high-performance and reliability, superior accuracy and surface finish, machine flexibility, ease of use and minimal maintenance. We understand machine uptime is critical.
Matsuura machines are built with our customers’ needs in mind. Since our foundation in 1935, Matsuura has been at the forefront of innovative design, development and manufacture of high quality machining centers. Our products satisfy the global requirement for high reliability, sustained accuracy and guaranteed performance.
At Matsuura Machinery USA, we also provide outstanding service and support. We deliver immediate telephone contact and support, same or next day onsite support, quick turnaround on spare parts, reasonable professional service cost and expert service capability.
Matsuura Machinery USA and our extensive distributor network seek to build trust, SOLVE issues and assist our customer in generating more profit. We set ourselves apart from the industry norm at Matsuura Machinery USA. We are a lean organization: small enough to understand the unique needs of and provide individualized attention to each customer.
Mr. Zelinski also points out that Automation as a given. Displays of automation at past editions of IMTS frequently conveyed the message, essentially, ‘You can get this machine with a robot!’ This year, the message advanced. Displays of automation this time frequently began with the expectation that many IMTS attendees will expect to automate, so the exhibitor’s thrust was to show how it could apply automation more effectively or capably than others. One prominent machine-tool exhibitor had a display in which it showed four different automated processes for machining the same part, so it could illustrate the strengths and the tradeoffs of each choice.
