St. Paul, MN (August 28, 2018) — Matsuura Machinery USA, Inc. invests in the next generation of talent through the company’s Matsuura USA Internship Program. Matsuura USA prioritizes employees as a fundamental investment, ensuring the company’s profitable future.

The Matsuura USA Internship Program is a form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional setting. The program provides students the opportunity to gain valuable applied experience and make connections in professional fields they are considering for career paths.

Nick Mitchell is one of the company’s recent Matsuura LUMEX Interns. Mitchell attends Dunwoody College of Technology where he is a candidate for the Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Engineering Technology.

“Through our internship program, we explore the talent early and seek the best to join the Matsuura USA team. Nick generates fresh ideas and his enthusiasm to gain real world experience, as he works alongside our industry-leading team to deliver Matsuura’s unique combination of technology platforms the Matsuura LUMEX Series combining selective laser sintering (SLS) along with high speed milling (HSM),” said Tom Houle, Director, Matsuura LUMEX, NA, Matsuura Machinery USA, Inc.

“From our Matsuura team members in the US and Japan, along with mentors who work directly with Nick, to our executives who provide leadership, we have advisers at all levels who are generous with their time,” Houle added.

Mitchell had learned of the Matsuura LUMEX technology in his classwork. He researched the company and developed an interest in the cutting-edge technology.

“When I first joined Matsuura’s LUMEX Team, I quickly realized how different and transformative it is in today’s world of 3D Metal Additive Manufacturing. This was an opportunity to grow myself along with the technology, something that has helped me to understand the process much more thoroughly,” Mitchell said.

“Working with the Matsuura LumexCAM software is my first practice of CAM programming, as my education has focused primarily on CAD design work. One of my mentors at Matsuura USA, Patrick Ethen, has facilitated the development of my design skills, and provided an understanding into how design and the physical manufacturing segments work together,” Mitchell continued.

According to Houle, the Matsuura USA LUMEX team did not establish separate “intern projects,” but instead provided work that integrates directly with the overall team objectives.

Mitchell managed a large percentage of the Matsuura LUMEX daily machine operations and oversaw the Matsuura LUMEX Inventory, planning for lead times and setting up safety stock of needed materials.

“This internship has given me valuable machine operation experience. Learning to operate a machine on the cutting edge of new technology will provide a leg up on my peers when entering the industry workforce,” Mitchell explained.

“With the collaborative nature of the work at Matsuura USA, this internship has been one of the most valuable experiences in my career. I now have an amazing platform when I enter the industry full time, and the skills I need to succeed along the way,” Mitchell concluded.

The Matsuura LUMEX Series combines selective laser sintering (SLS) along with high speed milling (HSM) commonly called Hybrid AM. The series, manufactured for more than ten years, is now offered in North America with sales and technical support provided by Matsuura Machinery USA, Inc.

Matsuura’s unique combination of technology platforms enables the production of parts and component geometries in a method that has never been possible nor imagined. These unique machines manufacture highly complex integrated parts and molds in shapes and configurations that were once impossible using traditional milling methods.

At IMTS 2018, Matsuura will exhibit for the first time, the Matsuura LUMEX Avance-25. The Matsuura LUMEX Avance-25 metal laser sintering hybrid milling machine is a powder bed metal AM platform with subtractive machining capability.

The Matsuura LUMEX Avance-25 relies on one-machine, one-process manufacturing of complex molds and parts by fusing metal laser sintering (3D SLS) technology with high speed milling technology. The Hybrid technology creates a “finished” part with machined surface finish and accuracy, without inducing the additional variation caused by multiple machine set-ups and part handling.   The machine enables production of complicated parts and molds through total manufacturing by digital engineering, using 3D data.

Make your plans to visit Matsuura USA at IMTS to discover innovative technology and manufacturing solutions including: 5-axis, vertical, horizontal, linear motor, multi-tasking CNC machine tools and machines with a powder bed metal AM platform with machining capability.
