MATSUURA’S HAND SCRAPING PRESERVES PRECISION AND ACCURACY

St. Paul, MN (January 10, 2019) — At Matsuura Machinery, our machine tool engineers maintain hand scraping of mated surfaces on our high-speed and high-precision machine tools. Hand scraping contributes to accuracy and stability of the machine tool by facilitating level and better aligned surfaces.

“No computerized or mechanical process can equal hand scraping. Matsuura’s style of surface scraping is one of the fundamental points for the perfect mechanical geometry in 5-axis within microns,” said Shawn Buboltz, Matsuura USA Director of Technical Services.

At Matsuura, our machines are built by our exceptionally skilled workforce, offering traditional craftsmanship including hand scraping to ensure tight tolerances, combined with state-of-the-art engineering principles and our total commitment to excellence in product design, innovation and manufacturing.

“Many machine tool builders have abandoned hand scraping. With automatic and computerized methods and the time and manual labor involved, hand scraping surfaces on a machine tool might seem old-fashioned. At Matsuura, hand scraping is integral to our production process as we are constantly focused and committed to total accuracy,” Buboltz explained.

“Final assembly is carried out by the hands of experienced engineers who embody the traditional craftsmanship for which Matsuura is renowned,” Buboltz said.

Hand scraping is a labor-intensive method usually performed on six components in the machine tool and using a flat scraper to true and create an oil-retaining texture to mated surfaces. Hand scraping will ensure tight tolerances are preserved and guarantees a level, even and smooth surface. With hand scraping, areas are created which will better hold lubrication and lessen friction between two mating surfaces.

“Hand scraping of all critical machine contact surfaces by some of the world’s most experienced machine tool technicians, aligns components within millionths of an inch, permitting consistently-held, tight tolerances,” Buboltz continued.

Matsuura machine parts are hand scraped to attain a textured finish which is a traditional measure of craftsmanship.

“Matsuura machine tools are used to create other machines. Therefore, the accuracy of such machine tools affects the accuracy of all final products. This is exactly why we are committed to accuracy in microns in all production steps. The contact surfaces of parts are finely adjusted and finished with hand-scraping performed by experienced engineers. Though slight errors can be compensated for by the machine control system, such methods will eventually result in deterioration. Our machines are long-lasting because we are thoroughly committed to accuracy in all steps,” Buboltz concluded.
