St. Paul, MN (November 11, 2019) — The Press-Enterprise (Riverside, CA) recently published an article detailing how manufacturing is booming in Southern California.
An index released by the Institute of Applied Research at CSU San Bernardino and based on a survey of 30 Inland Empire factory managers, puts the PMI at 54, up from 49.7 in the previous month. A reading above 50 suggests the sector is expanding.
A third survey, conducted during the third quarter by the Anderson Center for Economic Research at Chapman University, found California manufacturers do not share the pessimism voiced nationally.
The Chapman report found that employment in manufacturing increased by 0.7% in July across California. Nationally the increase was only 0.02%.
In Southern California, there were 627,000 people employed in the manufacturing sector in September, according to the most recent state report. Employment was up 0.2% in Los Angeles County, 0.1 percent in Orange County and 1.3% in the Inland Empire, with 2,000 new jobs created in the last 12 months across the four-county region.
The CSU San Bernardino report found a sharp increase in new factory orders last month, with production ramping up as well.
Chapman’s quarterly report put Orange County’s manufacturing sector at 57.9, down from 63.8 in the second quarter.
